Renting Family Say They Are Stuck in a House That is Making Them Sick
New Zealand homes should be safer for families!
In a recent article highlighting the neglect that some landlords are showing towards the rental properties they own, one family shares their experience of the conditions they are living in. “The house is starting to get really damp, the kids’ mattresses are turning mouldy”.
Fearing for the safety of her children, Washer has “been left at her wit’s end”. The article describes how “she has fallen through the bathroom floor and the roof is leaking”.
As the house is not in a liveable condition for the family, Mrs Washer has been in a battle with the landlord to get repairs on the property. With no action being taken Mrs Washer has taken the matter to the Tenancy Tribunal to try and reach a resolution.
Now more than ever, we see a definite need for a Rental Warrant of Fitness program.
The Rental Warrant of Fitness has been introduced to highlight areas where landlords can improve the livability of their properties so that families, such as the Washers are not living in dangerous conditions.
